Bananas are a delicious and versatile superfood that play a pivotal role in maintaining a healthy digestive system. Many of us grew up familiar with the BRAT diet (Bananas, Rice, Applesauce, Toast) as the remedy for an upset stomach. There has been a nasty stomach bug going around lately, so we have had a steady supply of bananas on hand ready to go. If you happen to fall victim, the BRAT diet, rest and staying hydrated will get you back on your feet in no time. Bananas are full of Potassium, Fiber, Vitamins B6 & C, and Manganese, making them the perfect snack for everyone from kids to adults. Bananas are an ideal food for athletes as they provide an energy boost that can be attributed to the high carbohydrate content.
The ideal ripeness of a banana is a heavily debated topic (amongst friends of course) Green/unripened bananas are more bitter, have lower amounts of sugar, and more starch making them a great food to be included in a Diabetic diet. Yellow/ripe bananas are sweeter and are full of antioxidants which are known to have cancer fighting properties.* Fun experiment- to maximize ripeness, separate babas from the bunch and wrap each stem with cling wrap. Did it work? How long did your bananas last? Here a few of our favorite ways to eat bananas:
- Vegan Strawberry Banana Smoothies
- Banana Pancakes
- Sliced up and served on peanut butter toast
